Softball team comes back
The Douglas High School softball team is right back in the pennant chase.
The Tigers defeated Elko, 4-2, Friday and then swept a doubleheader from Reno, 11-0 and 4-3, Saturday to improve to 11-5 in league and close within two games of first place. They are scheduled to play host to Carson today at 3:30 p.m.
Douglas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning Friday when Brooke Kizer hit a leadoff homer down the left field line. Elko took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Like a champion, the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the win.
Tomasa Kizer started the rally with a single into the hole. Jenny Smokey later walked with two outs.
Shephard reached on an error, scoring Kizer, before Kim Gitthens brought home Smokey and Shephard with a double.
Shephard picked up the win, giving up four hits while striking out three.
Shephard picked up the win and Cathy Mauzey the save in the first game against Reno. Rosi Contri had two hits, including a home run. Brooke and Tomasa Kizer, Rebecca Goodspeed and Michelle Roza each had a single and Smokey a double in the Tigers’ seven-hit attack.
Mauzey got the win and Gonzales the save in the second game. Goodspeed led the Tigers’ six-hit attack with a double and two RBIs.
