Smith leads Douglas boys golf in Sierra play
Sophomore Jack Smith carded a score of 107 to lead the Douglas High boys golf team in its Sierra League season opener Tuesday at Sierra Sage Golf Course in Reno.
Douglas finished sixth as a team at 621 with a young lineup that included five sophomores and one freshman. Tuesday’s match marked the first varsity experience for three of the six Tigers, according to coach Evan Evans.
“The kids were excited and nervous,” Evans said. “The team is very young and inexperienced, but has room to grow and improve. We talked on the trip home about what their approach needs to be this season and where they can improve and play better as the season advances.”
In addition to Smith, who was playing in just his second varsity match, five other Douglas players posted scores. Tobin Mayotte shot 115, Dylan McCullough 120, A.J. Hagenbach 137, freshman Grant Kuhlmann 142 and Tyler Kellar 146.
Galena won the team title by a 372-391 margin over Bishop Manogue. Carson was third with a score of 448. Manogue’s Ollie Osborne earned medalist honors with his 68.
The next league match on April 4 at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.
