Sheridan voted ‘Player of the Year’

by Chuck Smock

Douglas senior Dylan Sheridan has been named the Division II Offensive Player of the Year for the 1999 soccer season.

And, despite finishing second in the division standings and second at the zone tournament, only Sheridan and Douglas defender Nicky Hernandez received all-Division II first-team recognition from the coaches in the division.

Sheridan scored 19 goals and added nine assists to lead the Tigers in both categories and win the MVP award.

Tiger midfielder T.J. Plummer (11 goals, eight assists) and forward Kevin Gardner (four goals, four assists) were named to the all-Division II second team.

Douglas forward David Harder, defender Rex Belshaw and goalkeeper Chad Love each received honorable mention recognition.

Harder finished with eight goals and five assists, while Love completed 10 shutouts in his first season in goal and allowed only 18 goals in 21 games.

Philip Sheridan, who took over as the Tigers’ head coach midway through the season following the resignation of Mike Robinson, said he was surprised more of his players didn’t receive first- and second-team honors.

“It’s up to the other coaches if your kids make it,” Sheridan said. “I think T.J. Plummer should have been on the first team. He was second in goals on our team and second in assists.”

Each coach was allowed to nominate six players for all-division consideration, but was permitted to vote for a maximum of two of his own players.

Division II champion South Tahoe had only three of it players selected to the first team. Carson, which finished third in division play, had four first-team selections.

“To make it to the (zone) final, you would think Tahoe might get three (players on the first team) and we might get three,” Sheridan said. The kids (who didn’t receive honors) shouldn’t be disappointed. It’s not determined on the field. It’s basically if the coaches recognize their name or know who they are.”
