Rice, Cruz win Tah-Neva League wrestling gold
Carson Valley eighth graders Alex Rice and Nathan Cruz emerged as two-time champions Saturday at the Tah-Neva League Wrestling Tournament in Fallon.
The two gold medalists led a combined Pau-Wa-Lu and Carson Valley middle school team that produced eight medal winners during the seventh and eighth grade tournament held at Churchill County High School.
Rice pinned his way through the eighth grade heavyweight competition, capped by a win against a Yerington wrestler in the finals, to win his division and also secure the eighth grade MVP Athlete. He also won the league’s seventh grade heavyweight title last year.
Cruz won the eighth grade 130-pound weight class to repeat as league champion. He won the seventh grade 120-pound title last year.
The Carson Valley eighth graders wound up with third-place in the team standings.
Andrew Andrews also placed second in the 135-pound weight class, while Gabe Wetzel and Chad Singer placed third in their respective 140- and 150-pound weight classes. Sam Whilden (125 pounds) and Nikhil Jain (175 pounds) were fourth-place finishers.
Carson Valley had three medal winners in the seventh grade competition. Race Coman took second-place in the 105-pound weight class, Alex Bodenstein placed second at 110 pounds and Fred Foster placed fourth at 75 pounds. Coman lost by decision to an Alder Creek (Truckee) wrestler in his title match.
