Cornwell shines in spring game
The Blue team rode a 35-point second quarter en route to a 49-28 win in the annual Silver and Blue Spring Scrimmage on Saturday in front of an estimated crowd of 3,100 at Mackay Stadium in Reno.
The scrimmage format called for the Wolf Pack’s first-string — the Blue team — to take on the rest of the team in Silver in a “ones against the world” concept. The Silver team was also spotted a 21-0 lead.
Junior Ty Gangi, quarterbacking the Silver squad, quickly extended that lead to 28-0 in the first quarter with a 50-yard scoring drive.
But the Blue came roaring back as junior David Cornwell delivered a pair of touchdown passes and sophomore cornerback E.J. Muhammad returned two interceptions for touchdowns, from 37 yards and 18 yards respectively.
Cornwell, who just joined the Pack this semester as a transfer from Alabama, led the second-quarter scoring spree. Cornwell only played the first half and he completed 22-of-33 for 302 yards and the two scores.
Brendan O’Leary-Orange was the favorite target of Cornwell. The sophomore from Toronto, Canada hauled in 10 passes for 180 yards and a score. Senior Tucker Melcher had six catches for 86 yards and a TD reception.
Defensively, Gabriel Sewell had 12 tackles and Malik Reed recorded three sacks for the Blue team. Sophomore corner Cameron Turner had five pass breakups on the day.
After the scrimmage, the Wolf Pack welcomed children to the field for a youth skills clinic and later signed autographs for fans.
Nevada is scheduled to kick off its season Sept. 2 at Northwestern. The Wolf Pack’s home opener will be Sept. 9 against Toledo.
