Wrestlers win season debut
Seven wrestlers won by fall Wednesday night as the Douglas Tigers opened their season with a 47-33 dual meet victory against Wooster in Reno.
Mike Neff (132), Isaiah Schatt (182), Zachary Singer (220), Ian Pieller (285), Kindal Isham (106) and Andrew Williams (113) won by pin while Will Williams (126 pounds) won by technical fall to lead Douglas in the Sierra League dual meet. Douglas trailed 27-11 before Schat, Josh Jensen ( byforfeit), Singer, Pieller, Isham and Andrew Williams posted a string of wins to put the Tigers in control. Isham won his match in 1:04 and Neff in 1:12.
Freshman 170-pounder Blake Murray provided a bright spot in his narrow 5-4 loss to Wooster’s Joseph Pearson, a state tournament qualifier last season.
Douglas returns to action Saturday at Carson’s 17th annual Capital City Duals starting at 9 a.m. in Morse Burley Gym. The Tigers finished second at the tournament last year, losing only to the seven-time defending Sierra League champion Carson Senators.
Carson had its streak of 30 straight league dual meet wins end Wednesday with a 58-18 loss at Damonte Ranch. Carson was without seven of its top wrestlers who were ineligible to wrestle since their football season only ended on Saturday.
