Staff Reports

Joel Gomez knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers during a pivotal stretch midway through the second quarter to give the Coleville High boys basketball team a lead it never relinquished en route to a season-opening 51-43 victory against Big Pine at the Antelope Valley Lions Club Invitational.

Coleville lost the tournament championship game Saturday night against Lee Vining, 61-28.

On Friday night, Gomez scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the second quarter as the Wolves took a 29-25 halftime lead en route to presenting first-year coach Zaira Gonzales with her first win at Jackie Giorgi Gymnasium. The Wolves went on top for good thanks to a 10-3 run.

Gomez also scored on back-to-back drives to extend Coleville’s lead to 47-34 at the outset of the fourth quarter.

Carlos Morones also scored 11 points and Gage Sullivan added six, including a steal and layup that gave the Wolves a 38-32 lead with 3:32 left in the third quarter. Big Pine was led by sophomore guard Dominick Santiago with 12 points.

Gomez was named to the all-tournament team.
