Winning streak ends for Douglas
In a duel that came right down to the wire, Douglas High’s girls tennis team saw its regular win streak end Tuesday afternoon with a 10-8 setback at the hands of Reed in Sparks.
Reed (2-2) won four sets by 6-4 scores — two each in singles and doubles — en route to the Northern 4A conference win. For Douglas (3-1), the outcome ended a 13-match conference win streak that dated back to the end of the 2014 season (10-9 tie-breaker loss to Reno). The Tigers were 10-0 last year.
Douglas won seven of nine singles sets, led by senior Kylie Coziahr with 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 victories. Maggie Rich and Kari Coziahr both won two of their three sets, although they lost to Reed’s Meredith Hoppe by 6-4 scores (Rich lost in the first round and Coziahr in the third).
Reed picked up another of those 6-4 wins from the all-senior doubles team of Alexa Koehler and Allie Hughes, who edged Shelby Casaus and Kelsey Carlson.
Reed held a 6-4 lead at the end of the first round and 9-7 after two rounds.
Shelby Casaus and Kelsey Carlson gave Douglas its only doubles victory when they took a 7-5 decision in the third round.
Reed’s Courtney Shinegawa and Samantha Schwartz combined to sweep their three doubles matches, dropping only one game along the way. Shinegawa was a quarterfinalist in the region tournament girls singles last year.
Douglas visits Reno on Tuesday for a match between the North’s top two teams from each of the last two seasons.
