GRANT DENNY — Feather River College (Quincy, Calif.), 2011 Douglas High School graduate: Denny captured all-around cowboy honors at his most recent rodeo in Susanville, Calif., and won the bareback riding event as he posted a score of 75.0 in his season-opening West Coast Region rodeo on Oct. 10-11 hosted by Feather River.
WYATT DENNY — Panola College (Carthage, Texas), 2013 Douglas High School graduate: Denny started his freshman season on a strong start on Sept. 27-28 when he earned the men’s all-around championship at the first Southern Region Rodeo hosted by Panola College. Denny placed third in bareback riding and sixth in team roping.
Denny was invited to compete this week in the first ever Binion’s Buckoff during the National Finals in Las Vegas, which showcases collegiate cowboys from across the nation. The Denny brothers will compete at pro events in Australia later this month.
HUNTER MYERS — Harvard University, 2013 Douglas High School graduate: Myers made his first shot for the Crimson a good one on Nov. 30 when he knocked down a 3-pointer in their 71-50 victory against TCU during the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout championship game in Anchorage. Myers saw one minute of action in a contest that saw Harvard surge to a 48-25 halftime lead.
CHRISTOPHER DOWNS — Butte College, 2011 Douglas High School graduate: Downs was a defensive standout for Butte in its 81-68 victory on Nov. 29 against the Simpson College junior varsity in the Ray Morgan Roadrunner Classic in Butte Valley, Calif. The Chico Enterprise Record reported coach Russ Critchfield credited the defense of Downs, one of two players who combined to hold Simpson’s leading scorer to 2 points. Note: Critchfield, in his 16th season as Butte’s head coach, was a star player from 1965-68 at the University of California, where he was an All-American guard for Cal. Critchfield has been inducted into Cal’s Athletic Hall of Fame and into the Pacific-10 Conference Basketball Hall of Honor.
