Veteran Tigers set for a new season
A nucleus of eight returnees is leading the Douglas High volleyball team into the start of a new season.
Douglas, 15-12 overall and a region tournament semifinalist in 2015, travels to Yerington today for a 5 p.m. non-league match and then opens in the High Sierra Tournament on Friday in Reno. The Tigers played their home opener Tuesday against Truckee.
The Tigers’ list of returnees includes senior libero/defensive specialist Raychel Allen, senior middle blocker Isabelle Peterson, senior outside hitter Taryn Allmett, senior outside hitter Ashley Campagna, junior setter Talyn Jackson, junior defensive specialist/libero Alex DeMaranville-Robinson and sophomore setter Maddi Rozier.
Peterson was a first-team all-league selection last season. Jackson has verbally committed to play at Virginia Tech after her high school graduation in 2018 and earned second-team all-league honors last fall.
Jackson, Allen, Peterson and Allmett are back for their third varsity season with a team that won the region championship in 2014.
Looking ahead, the Sierra League once again shapes up to be highly competitive with both Bishop Manogue and Carson, teams that went 1-2 during the 2015 regular season and at the region tournament. Manogue (34-6 overall) also finished second at the state tournament with a roster that included only three seniors. Carson, the region tournament runner-up in both 2014 and ’15, returns a strong core of returnees.
Two teams will represent the North at the 4A state tournament Nov. 1-5 in Reno.
The Tigers will face a good test today against Yerington, the three-time defending state 2A champion. On Friday, Douglas opens in the High Sierra Tournament at 1 p.m. against the Nevada Union Miners (Grass Valley, Calif.).
