Van Winkle receives repeat recognition

Staff Reports

Douglas High senior Shelby Van Winkle received honorable mention recognition on the recently-released all-Sierra League volleyball list.

Van Winkle, a three-year varsity veteran for the Tigers, was a second-team all-league setter for the Tigers in 2012. She put up solid all-around numbers, including 433 assists, 185 digs, 98 kills, 45 aces and 27 blocks.

“She is a wonderfully diligent athlete who is intense and goal-oriented,” said coach Suzi Townsell, whose Tigers ended their season with an 18-16 overall record, 2-14 in league. “We will miss her awesome spirit.”

Katie McCullough and Ariah Barth also deserved to receive recognition, but missed out in the voting, according to Townsell.

“They both were big contributors to our team and had stats similar to Shelby’s,” the coach said.

Note: Wooster’s Ron Malcolm was selected as Coach of the Year after guiding the Colts to a third-place finish in the league race. Malcolm has coached volleyball and baseball at Wooster since 1989. Of interest, Malcolm played baseball at under coach Gary Powers at the University of Nevada in 1985-86.
