Tigers show defense in loss to Panthers
Brian Morales scored in the 22nd minute to break up a scoreless tie Wednesday afternoon and the North Valleys High boys soccer team went on to a 3-0 Northern 4A victory against Douglas in Minden.
While Douglas (0-2 league, 0-3 overall) has managed to score one goal through three games to date, in this case, the Tigers were up against a North Valleys (2-0, league, 3-1-4 overall) that posted a combined total of 22 shutouts during the 2015 and 2014 seasons. The Panthers defeated Douglas 1-0 in the first round of last year’s region tournament and 1-0 during the regular season. North Valleys reigned as the 2014 region champion.
The North Valleys back line still features Miguel Rodriguez, the High Desert League Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.
Douglas had some bright spots during the contest, including senior goalkeepers Crew Kudrna and Luke Heinrichs. Kudrna made a leaping stop of a shot to his right 12 minutes into the game, while Heinrichs came on in the second half and produced a pair of quality saves.
Other North Valleys scoring opportunities were denied when Anthony Soria cleared the ball out away from the goal line five minutes into the second half. Mario Meza also cleared the ball out of the box three times during a five-minute stretch early in the first half.
Eduardo Martinez scored in the 56th minute to extend the North Valleys lead to 2-0 and Jeziel Guerra added a goal in the 75th minute. Martinez was a first-team all-league forward last year.
The previous Saturday, Flavi Lopez scored a goal for the Tigers in their 2-1 non-league loss against Incline.
Douglas hosts Reno this coming Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
