Tigers scrimmage at Fernley tonight
Led by a core of 13 returning varsity veterans, 10 of whom are seniors, the Douglas High football team will take its first step toward the 2015 regular season tonight with a scrimmage in Fernley.
The Tigers and Division I-A Fernley Vaqueros varsity teams will square off for their scrimmage at 7 p.m. The freshman and JV teams are also scheduled to scrimmage at 5 p.m. in Fernley.
Douglas is looking to improve on its 3-8 record of 2014. Even though three all-region players from last year have graduated — Andrew Jensen, Northern Division I Lineman of the Year (now listed as a defensive lineman on the University of Jamestown, N.D. roster), Nick Abreu (Pomona-Pitzer) and Kaleb Foster (playing baseball at the University of Nevada) — the Tigers have some talented returnees.
Four of those players earned second-team all-Sierra League recognition in 2014: Reagan Roberson at linebacker, Josh Jensen at defensive end, Tomas Leitenbauer at wide receiver and kicker Adrian Gonzalez. Sam Melhus was also an honorable mention all-league pick at defensive back.
Taran Grove, Tre Jackson, Bryce James, Cody Ball, Luke Houghton, Trevor Tierney, Moses Broome, and Austin Warren also return with varsity experience for the Tigers. Roberson, Grove and Jackson all saw extensive action as sophomores last season.
James started eight games at quarterback to end last season and wound up with 647 yards pssing and another 300 yards rushing (he rushed for 124 yards in a 47-21 loss to Damonte Ranch). Leitenbauer caught 13 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, Roberson was credited with 21 tackles and a team-high 65 assists last year.
Tonight, the Tigers will face a Fernley squad that went 7-4 last year and qualified for the Division I-A playoffs. The Vaqueros open their regular season next Friday at home against Hug.
Douglas kicks off its regular season next Friday at home against McQueen.
