Tigers pin Grizzlies in dual meet
Joshua Jensen, Zachary Singer and Ryland DeSomber led off with pins Wednesday night to put the Douglas High wrestling team on track to a 54-24 Sierra League dual meet victory against Galena in Reno.
Jensen, a sophomore hitting in the leadoff spot in the 182-pound match, won by fall in the second round. Singer only needed 1:18 to win at 195 pounds and freshman Ryland DeSomber won at 220 pounds in the first round as Douglas (2-1 league) took an early 18-0 lead.
For the Tigers, who won five of the six contested bouts, the 2-1 dual meet record to date marks a significant jump from 2012-13 when they were 1-5. By comparison, Douglas lost 51-24 in last year’s league dual meet against Galena.
“I feels good to be on the winning side,” coach David Singer said on an upbeat note. “The guys have all been working hard, and give credit to the support we’ve been getting from our staff of assistants — D’Art Johnson, Mike Cubillos and John Murray. They’ve given us a wide variety of strengths for the kids to learn from.”
Douglas also received first-round pins from senior 160-pounder Garret Seward in 36 seconds — the fastest pin of the night — and freshman 152-pounder Isaiah Schat won his varsity debut in 1:27. The Tigers picked up an additional 24 points on forfeits.
The Tigers return to action today and Saturday at the 14th annual Vaquero Classic in Fernley.
