Tigers lose to Reed, Reno
Jamel Ramos and Alec Leighton knocked down 3-pointers in the final five seconds Friday night to lift the Reed High boys basketball team to a 49-46 victory against Douglas.
A 3-pointer by Ramos from the top of the key with 5.0 seconds left tied the score at 49-all, then after Douglas turned the ball over in its backcourt with 1.0 showing on the clock, Leighton took an inbounds pass from Cody DeHaan on the left wing and hit another 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give Reed (2-0 league, 7-3 overall) its win at Randy Green Court.
Douglas (2-2 league, 3-7 overall) led 46-43 after Connor Lyons converted a free throw with 37.3 seconds left and Sam Broersma added another free throw with 10.6 seconds left to play.
Lyons finished the night with 17 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter. Michael Johnson also scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Broersma grabbed 13 rebounds and Alex Tessmann 11 rebounds.
The two teams were tied 19-19 at halftime and then went back and forth during a third quarter that saw six lead changes. Douglas went up 27-26 when Lyons penetrated the lane for a field goal midway through the third. Lyons dished to Tre Jackson for an inside shot that made it 30-27 and the Tigers never trailed again until the final buzzer.
Jace Hart connected on an outside jumper as Douglas pushed its lead to 42-38 with 4:08 left to play.
Ramos led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Leighton added 17 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Lincoln Turner connected on a 3-pointer that brought the Raiders back to 44-43 with 1:41 left to play.
Leighton was coming off a career-best 34-point performance the night before in Reed’s 68-57 win at Damonte Ranch.
Douglas plays this coming week at the 25th annual Under Armour Holiday Classic Dec. 26-30 in San Diego. The Tigers are entered in the tournament’s Senators Division and open Friday in the evening’s featured game against Santa Fe Christian (5-2) on its home court in Solana Beach, Calif. They come back to play again Saturday against either Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) or Great Oak (Temecula, Calif.).
The Under Armour tournament will feature a national field of 75-plus teams that will play at five different high schools.
RENO 60, DOUGLAS 50
The Reno Huskies rallied from a six-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon to win the Northern Division I cross-over contest.
Douglas led 32-26 at the intermission, however, the Tigers were limited to 18 points after the intermission. Reno (2-1, 4-7) held a 42-40 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Johnson scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and Hart 11 for the Tigers. Tessmann pulled down nine rebounds (five on the offensive end).
