Tigers’ Johnson scores 35 points in tourney loss
Despite a career-high 35-point performance from Michael Johnson, the Douglas High boys basketball team lost 69-60 against Vista Murrieta on Monday at the Under Armour Holiday Classic in San Diego.
Johnson, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, shot 8-for-13 from 3-point range and 7-for-11 from the free throw line to spark the Tigers against Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.). Connor Lyons also scored nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Sam Broersma added six points. The Tigers shot 10-for-17 from beyond the arc against the Broncos (6-4).
Douglas (4-10 overall) came back Tuesday morning to post a 67-48 win over Oakland (3-7) behind 15 points from Lyons and 11 from Tre Jackson. The Tigers led 34-25 at halftime and pulled away with a 12-5 run through the third quarter.
The Tigers also lost 70-39 on Saturday against Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and 55-47 on Friday against Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach, Calif.).
On Saturday, senior guard Jason Romero connected on five 3-pointers and scored 21 points while Quenton Jackson added 14 points and six steals to lead Mira Costa (8-4). The Mustangs led 18-14 after one quarter and 36-23 at halftime.
Ben Nolting and Johnson scored eight points each to lead the Tigers offensively. Nolting shot 4-for-7 from the field. Broersma grabbed nine rebounds, while Zach Kellar and Alex Tessmann collected seven each. Trey Maurer dished out three assists.
Broersma scored 14 points for the Tigers in their loss Friday against Santa Fe Christian (8-3). The Tigers trailed 11-8 after one quarter and 32-17 at halftime.
Douglas returned to action Tuesday against Oakland (3-6).
Meanwhile, the Douglas girls team (8-3) lost its first two “NCAA Division” games at the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego. Senior forward Danielle DaCosta and 6-foot-1 freshman McKenzie Forbes scored 17 points each Friday night to lead Folsom (9-2) to a 48-33 win over the Tigers.
On Saturday, Katherine Mauldin scored 25 points to lead Ramona, Calif. (7-5) past the Tigers 57-38. Ramona, Calif. (7-5). Mauldin, a 5-9 senior, earned Valley League Player of the Year honors for Ramona during the 2013-14 season. Corryne Millett led Douglas with 10 points.
