Now that most of the preliminaries are out of the way, the Douglas High boys and girls basketball teams are ready to get down to the business of competing for playoff berths.

The Tigers play at home tonight against Spanish Springs — the girls tip off at 5:15 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m. — and then travel to Hug Friday night for games that will mark the end of their Northern Division I crossover schedules.

The Douglas boys bring a 3-1 league record (4-8 overall) into their game against Spanish Springs (6-6 overall, 2-2 league), the defending High Desert League champion.

Meanwhile, the Tigers’ girls are 0-4 in league (3-9 overall) coming into their game against Spanish Springs (3-11 overall, 1-3 league).

Next week, the Tigers launch into Sierra League play with Tuesday games against Galena in Reno and then at Bishop Manogue on Jan. 15. Galena is the defending region tournament boys champion and Manogue the defending region girls champion.

Douglas will play three of its last four regular season games at home to end the regular league season in mid-February. The region tournament will be held Feb. 16-20, with the semifinals scheduled for Feb. 18 and the finals Feb. 20 at Spanish Springs High School. The two finalists in both brackets move on to represent the North at the NIAA Division I state tournament Feb. 25-26 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.
