Tigers fall to Cougars in wild one
Gabby Ordaz and the Spanish Springs Cougars put 35 first-quarter points on the scoreboard and went on to a 51-27 non-league victory against Douglas Friday night in Sparks.
The two teams combined to score four touchdowns on kick returns and two more on interception returns during a wild first half in which the Cougars jumped out to a 41-21 lead.
Ordaz returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for the first of three touchdowns on the night, two on kick returns. Austin Cadenhead scored on an interception return as Spanish Springs (1-1) took a 35-7 lead after one quarter. The Cougars were up 21-0 with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Douglas (1-2) answered immediately after that when Dawson Coman raced 90 yards for the first of his two scoring kickoff returns. The momentum was shortlived, however, because Orda returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it 28-7.
Coman scored on an 89-yard kick return in the second quarter, while Haydn Brown intercepted a pass in the flat near midfield and ran untouched into the end zone for another touchdown as the Tigers cut their deficit to 41-21 with 8.9 seconds left before halftime.
Dakota Lowden scored the Tigers’ final touchdown on an 85-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Nick Pedroza had a strip and fumble recovery that stopped another Spanish Springs threat.
