Tigers’ boys fourth at Twilight meet
John Munyan led a balanced pack of Douglas High runners to fourth-place in the large schools boys varsity race Friday night at the University of Nevada-hosted Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic in Sparks.
Munyan placed third with a time of 13:13 over the 4,000-meter (2.49 miles) course at Shadow Mountain Park. Reed’s Anthony Ocegueda won the race in a meet record time of 12:44, which improved the previous best of 12:49 set by Reno’s Jordan Cardenas in 2011.
Spanish Springs captured the team title by a 66-94 score over defending region champion McQueen, while Galena finished third with 111 points and Douglas fourth with 121 points.
After Munyan crossed the finish line, the Tigers packed in their next four scoring runners within 34 seconds of each other. Anthony Voss was the team’s second finisher in 23rd (14:14), followed by Danner Hillman in 26th (14:21), Bryan Harris 28th (14:22) and Sean Dunkelman 41st (14:48).
Megan Ruffo and Maya Smith placed 18th and 21st respectively in the large schools girls race and Douglas finished eighth as a team. Ruffo ran 16:30 and Smith 16:41.
The varsity girls meet record also fell as Sonora (Calif.) junior Cassi Land ran 14:48 to win by 37 seconds over Reed’s Samantha King-Shaw. Land placed seventh at last year’s California state meet Division III race (she ran 17:59 for 5,000 meters).
James Nair led the Tigers to championship honors in the JV boys race. Nair, a sophomore, placed fourth individually with a 15:33 clocking. Brandon Koyama placed ninth (15:41), Carson Osborn 16th (16:00), C.J. Hill-Holeman 18th (16:06) and Steven Shaw 19th (16:08) to round out the team scoring as Douglas edged McQueen 66-78 for first-place in the team standings.
Junior Leslee Alaniz placed third for Douglas in the JV girls race with a 17:50 effort. Sophomore Emily Hillman placed eight in 18:38.
The Tigers run again Saturday at the 54rd annual Nevada Union Invitational in Grass Valley, Calif.
