Tennis girls advance in region play
Douglas High’s Madelyn Landerfelt defeated Lauren Kreutzer in a featured singles test and the Tigers prevailed over Spanish Springs 14-4 in a first-round Northern Division I Region Tournament girls tennis match.
Douglas, 12-0 overall and seeded No. 1 in the tournament, advanced into the semifinals and a matchup against Galena on Thursday (results were unavailable at press time). The championship round is set for today at 3 pm. at Caughlin Ranch in Reno.
Landerfelt defeated Kreutzer 6-0 in a meeting between players who figure to be top-four seeds for the region’s individual tournament next week. The Douglas junior (23-1 this season) needed a big rally to defeat Kreutzer, a freshman, 7-6 (7-1) in their regular season meeting on Sept. 10 in Minden. Kreutzer, a freshman, is now 27-4.
Terra Williams-Kaitlyn Smith won three sets (6-1, 6-3, 6-0), while Tara Cottrill-Kylie Coziahr won twice and Kayleigh Carlson-Anne Pomroy (26-0) won their lone set, 6-0. Shelby Casaus-Kelsey Carlson won 6-2 and Jenni Martin-Angelina Stein won 7-5.
Maggie Rich and Kari Coziahr went 2-1 in their singles sets.
Douglas 13, McQueen 5
The Tigers wrapped up their perfect regular season on Monday when they defeated McQueen in a makeup match, 13-5. The match was rescheduled after Thursday’s rainout.
Pomroy and Carlson went 2-0 in doubles, including a 6-2 win against McQueen’s Kalisse Earl and Ireland Earl (27-3 this season). Smith and Williams also defeated the Earls, 7-5.
Note: Carlson-Pomroy and Williams-Smith are the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and Cottrill-Coziahr No. 5 in the region tournament doubles bracket next week. Landerfelt is seeded No. 2, Rich No. 5 and Kari Coziahr No. 16 in the singles bracket.
