Team effort leads Douglas to 20-1 win
Ten different players contributed to a 21-hit attack Tuesday afternoon and the Douglas High softball team led start to finish for a 20-1 win at home against Damonte Ranch.
Douglas (15-5-2 overall, 11-1 league) scored eight runs in the first two innings and never looked back in a Northern Division I contest that was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
“Every batter hit well in this game, from the No. 1 batter to the No. 9 batter,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “We started hitting well in the first inning and we did not let up.”
Allison Meyer hit 4-for-5 with two doubles and seven RBI to lead the offense.
Corryne Diaz also hit 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Layne Waggoner 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Nicole Dunn 3-for-4 and Leonna Mortimer 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Shaena Robinson went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Makayla Shaver went 1-for-4 with a double and RBI, Kelly Sonnemann 1-for-4, Kaitlyn Bowman 1-for-3 with one RBI, and Katie Chieffo 1-for-1 with one RBI.
Sonnemann and Mortimer connected for RBI doubles to highlight a four-run first inning. Meyer’s two-run double ignited a four-run second inning rally.
Meyer added a two-run single in the third inning and two-run double in the fourth to her big day.
Bowman pitched five innings, allowed five hits and one earned run to earn her victory. Bowman got a strikeout to end the first inning with runners on second and third. She was aided by a defensive effort that turned double plays in the second and third innings.
“This was a team effort, both offensively and defensively,” Parks said. “We will need efforts like this to do well in our upcoming games, beginning with Galena Thursday and Saturday.
Douglas hosted Galena in a league game Thursday (the result was unavailable at press time). The Tigers defeated Galena, 8-6, when the two teams met in the Reed Spring Break Tournament.
“Galena hit well when we played them,” Parks said of the earlier game. “We will need to keep up the good pitching, defense, and hitting to beat Galena. From here on out, we will be playing the teams that are in the upper half of the league standings.”
