Sierra Lutheran posts league victories
Special to The R-C
Second quarter runs were the difference Thursday when the Sierra Lutheran High School girls and boys basketball teams won their first Western Division IV league basketball games of the season at Excel Christian in Sparks.
Sierra Lutheran’s girls outscored Excel Christian 9-0 in the second quarter and went on to win, 23-11. In the boys game, the Falcons outscored Excel Christian 20-7 in the second quarter to take a lead they never gave up on their way to a 61-45 win.
The Sierra Lutheran girls improved their overall record to 4-2 on Saturday with a 50-10 non-league win at home against Hug. The boys team has an 1-8 overall record after its 78-35 loss on Saturday against undefeated Redding Christian from Northern California.
On Thursday, the varsity girls game started out slow, with only a few points on the board. At the start of the second quarter, Excel Christian led 7-4. Sierra had some awesome defense and pulled some fast breaks and took a 13-7 halftime lead.
The Falcons kept their lead by only allowing two baskets and scoring 10 more points during the third and fourth quarters.
The varsity boys played exceptionally well. They held a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanded that to 35-21 at halftime. The Falcons were still out front at the end of the third quarter, 42-30, and kept up their great energy, persistence and patience all the way to the final buzzer.
Sierra Lutheran’s JV boys had a rough start. They were down 4-7 in the first quarter, then came back to pick it up in the second quarter to take an 18-17. After halftime, they continued their lead with aggression and great defense, but still came out on the short end of a 41-36 score.
Both Sierra teams play again after Christmas at the State Farm Tournament in Reno on Dec. 28-31. The Falcons play their next league games on Jan. 5 at home against Whittell.
