Whittell High soared to an early lead Tuesday night and went on to a 69-56 win in a shoot-out between Western Division IV boys basketball front-runners before a full house in Zephyr Cove.

The Warriors took a 20-8 first-quarter advantage and stayed in control the rest of the way to improve their league-leading record to 9-1 (16-3 overall). Sierra Lutheran dropped to 7-3 in league (13-7 overall) and one-half game behind second-place Virginia City coming into a contest tonight at Smith Valley.

Whittell went to the locker room at halftime with a 31-24 lead. Palmer Chaplin led all scorers with 27 points for the Warriors.

Michael Patrick led the Falcons with 14 points, while Nick Walker added 11, Evan Lewis 10 and Jared Hamilton 8. Markus Gallegos and Walker both connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.


Cali Benton had a career-high 20 rebounds and Natalie Echeverria’s scored a season-high 14 points Tuesday to help the Sierra Lutheran girls post a 28-24 win at Whittell.

Sierra Lutheran (8-12 overall, 3-6 league) jumped out to a 12-2 first-quarter lead then held on for the win. The Falcons held a 21-13 lead at the end of three quarters.

Benton had 10 offensive rebounds and 10 on the defensive end in addition to scoring 9 points for the Falcons. Zoe Bertz led Whittell with 12 points.
