Special to The R-C
Nine-year-old Sierra Boettger won the Girls 12-and-under age group at the Caughlin Athletic Club Open held Saturday and Sunday in Reno.
Sierra, the No. 2 seed, cruised through her first-round match, 6-0, 6-1, then won in the semifinals on a tie-breaker against Elayna Avansino of Reno. Sierra split the first two games, 6-0 and 2-6, then won the tie-breaker 10-2.
In the finals, Sierra faced off with the No. 1 seed, Celeste Parker of Reno, and came out a 6-0, 6-3 winner. Both players demonstrated proficiency in sustaining long rallies, but the match was eventually decided by Sierra’s capability to aggressively attack and move her opponent.
This was a rematch from May 3, when Sierra beat Celeste 6-2, 6-0 in the finals of the Lakeridge Open in Reno.
Sierra, a fourth-grader at Piñon Hills Elementary School, credits her success to local coaches, Sue Cowan and Ginny Unger.
