Sadie Gastelum eyes gold medal run today
Here is a breakdown on other Carson Valley athletes who have graduated from high school and now compete in college:
SADIE GASTELUM — California State University-Chico, 2012 Douglas High graduate: Gastelum figures to be in the gold medal hunt today when the California Collegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championships women’s race is held at Golden Gate Park’s Speedway Meadow in San Francisco. Gastelum, who has earned conference Runner of the Week honors twice this season, will face a strong field that includes defending conference champion Kori Gilley of Humboldt State.
BECKY GRABOW — University of Pacific, 2012 Sierra Lutheran High graduate: Grabow finished 74th on Oct. 17 at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara, running a time of 21:54 that ranks among the top five all-time over 6,000 meters for Pacific women’s cross country. The Tigers run at the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday in Spokane Valley, Wash.
ASPEN ABBOTT — Southern Oregon University (Ashland, Ore.), 2013 Douglas graduate: Abbott finished 35th in a time of 24:15 for 6,000 meters on Oct. 17 at the Lewis & Clark Invitational in Estacada, Ore. Her effort helped Southern Oregon take second-place in the nine-team women’s field.
WES HUNDLEY — Earlham College (Richmond, Ind.), 2014 Douglas graduate: Hundley gained 307 total yards last Saturday in Earlham’s 51-20 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss at Bluffton (Ohio). The sophomore quarterback rushed for 123 yards and scored on a 37-yard run in the third quarter, plus he completed 19 of 36 passes for 184 yards, and threw two touchdown passes.
