Munyan places third at Clovis
John Munyan ran to third-place in his Division 3 varsity boys race Saturday at the 38th annual Asics Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif.
Munyan clocked a time of 15:52 over the 5,000-meter course at Woodward Park — the same course where the California state meet will be held next month — and was only eight seconds away from the gold medal. The St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) duo of Colby Corcoran (15:44) and Ezra Sotelo (15:46) swept the top two places. Munyan’s time was a personal record for 5,000 meters by 12 seconds.
Bryan Harris ran 16:49 to place 24th, a personal best time by 36 seconds. Sean Dunkleman ran 17:30, Danner Hillman 17:34 and Andrew Voss 17:47 to round out the team scoring. Douglas finished ninth in the Division 3 boys team race with 295 points.
Sophomore Maya Smith placed seventh in the Division 3 varsity girls race in 19:18, a personal best time by nearly two minutes. She was the second fastest Northern Nevada runner in the race, behind only Wooster’s Gillian Ipsen in 19:18.
Megan Ruffo ran 20:10 to finish 30th, Leslee Alaniz 21:29, Baylee Wood 21:59 and Maegan Collins 22:06 to complete the team scoring.
Douglas finished ninth in the team race with 286 points. Esperanza (Anaheim, Calif.) captured its third straight Clovis medium schools division team championship by a 90-110 margin over Tahoe-Truckee.
Division 3 was open to schools with enrollments between 1,000 and 1,799.
More than 2,000 high school runners overall competed in 20 girls and boys races. Medals were presented to the top 30 finishers.
