Millett scores 21 for Tigers in win
Corryne Millett scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter Friday as the Douglas High girls basketball team took an early lead and then held on for a 52-46 win over Reed.
Maddy Lowe scored 14 points while Leonna Mortimer contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for Douglas (3-0 league, 8-0 overall).
The Tigers led 16-9 after one quarter. Gina Peacock sank a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 38-24 midway through the third quarter. Then, after Reed pulled back to within 38-28, Mandy Weaver came up with a steal and dished off to Lowe for a layup that turned into a three-point play as the Tigers went up 41-28 at the end of the quarter.
Reed (1-2 league, 2-3 overall) cut the gap to 50-46 after Taylor Johnson hit a 3-pointer and Nakiyah LeSure scored on an inside shot with 41 seconds left. The Raiders had two opportunities to pull closer inside the final 25 seconds, however, McKenna Kynett intercepted one pass and Millett came up with a takeaway to seal the win.
Aneesa Mwakapumba led the Raiders offensively with 13 points, while LeSure added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
