A big first half Friday night helped lift the Douglas High girls basketball team to a 55-40 Sierra League victory against Galena in Reno.
Maddy Lowe scored 23 points to lead the attack as Douglas (4-4 league, 7-9 overall) extended its win streak to five games overall, four in league, and maintained its hold on third-place in the Sierra League standings.
“It was a good team win,” Douglas coach Werner Christen noted. “Everyone contributed.”
The Tigers jumped out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 35-15 at halftime.
Galena (1-7 league, 2-12 overall) was led by Kristin Farrell and Josie Peck, who scored 13 points each. Both players connected on three 3-pointers.
Douglas defeated Galena in the junior varsity game, 41-17.
Note: The Northern Division I Region Tournament tips off for girls on Feb. 16, at the sites of higher seeded teams. The top four finishers from the Sierra and High Desert leagues qualify for the tournament. The semifinals will be played Feb. 18 and the finals on Feb. 20 at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks. The two finalists advance to the NIAA State Tournament on Feb. 25-26 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.
