Sophomore Kindel Isham was undefeated in his 106-pound weight class and the Douglas High wrestling team went 3-2 on Saturday to capture fifth-place at the 17th annual Capital City Duals in Carson City.

Isham, who now weighs in close to 106 pounds after he competed 10 pounds lighter as a freshman last season, won each of his five matches by fall during the dual team tournament held in Carson High’s Morse Burley Gym. Two of those wins came in less than one minute as Isham improved his overall season record to 6-0 with six pins.

Meanwhile, Douglas (4-3 overall) split its four dual meets during pool competition. The Tigers opened with a 61-15 loss against Carson, rebounded to defeat Wooster 42-34 and Spanish Springs 45-28 then dropped a 48-30 verdict to eventual tournament champion Reno. The Tigers cruised to a 61-18 victory against North Valleys in the fifth-sixth place meet.

“I thought we looked good,” Douglas coach Dave Singer said. “The score in our match against Reno wasn’t indicative of how the boys wrestled. A lot of those matches could have gone either way.”

Freshman 170-pounder Blake Murray compiled a 4-1 record, with three wins coming by pin. His only loss came at the hands of Reno’s Andrew Berreyesa, the region champion and state runner-up as a freshman last season (50-5 record).

Junior 132-pounder Michael Neff went 4-1 with one pin. His only defeat came against Carson standout Spencer Rogers.

Senior 220-pounder Zachary Singer was 4-1, with two pins. His loss came against Brady Rivera, the region 182-pound champion last season. Singer reversed a loss he absorbed at the region tournament last February when he pinned Reno’s Bryce Cartlidge with seven seconds left in the second period.

Another bright spot was delivered by sophomore 195-pounder Ryland DeSomber in his return from an elbow injury from football season. DeSomber went 3-1 in exhibition matches on Saturday and is expected to be in the Tigers’ lineup tonight in their Sierra League home dual meet against Galena.

“Once all the kids settle into their regular weight classes, I think we’re going to be even tougher,” coach Singer said.

The Tigers travel to Winnemucca to face Lowry in a Thursday dual meet followed by the Cody Louk Memorial Invitational. Both events will be held at the Winnemucca Events Center, which will host the state championships in February. Lowry has won six straight Division IV (and 3-A) state championships.
