Huskies take down Tigers
Will Barnard returned the game’s opening kickoff 60 yards to set up one touchdown and then caught a 60-yard scoring pass Friday night to put the Reno Huskies on track to a 49-24 win at home against the Douglas Tigers.
Reno (5-0 overall) scored on three straight possessions to take a 21-0 lead at Foster Field in the final nonleague game for both teams.
Josh Gurule kicked a 35-yard field goal as Douglas (2-3) cut the gap to 21-3 in the first quarter and quarterback Hunter Hickey scored on a 2-yard run to make it 35-10 26 seconds left before halftime.
Ryland DeSomber’s 3-yard touchdown run brought Douglas within 42-17 with 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Running back Brandon Kaho scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 30-yarder off a direct snap that put the Huskies on top 21-0 midway through the first quarter. Barnard caught a sideline pass from quarterback Drake Vestbie, shook free from one tackle and ran the final 45 yards to make it 14-0.
Douglas begins its Sierra League season and celebrates homecoming next Friday against Bishop Manogue.
Virginia City 36, Whittell 30
Isaiah Yoder and Ireland Franklin had two touchdowns each in Virginia City’s 36-30 win over Whittell in a Western 1A 8-man football showdown Friday at Gary Lundergreen Field in Zephyr Cove.
Franklin scored twice in the first quarter and Virginia City (2-0, 4-0) led 20-0 before defending league champion Whittell (1-1, 3-1) rallied back.
Quarterback Dismas Womack brought Whittell to within 28-24 on a 6-yard run in the third quarter and Corey Hubbard had a 1-yard run in the fourth to make it 36-30. The Warriors had two opportunities to score again, however, the Muckers’ defense forced a punt and followed with an interception.
