Hillman paces Tigers in alpine opener
Danner Hillman opened his season for the Douglas High alpine ski team on a positive note on Monday when he captured fifth-place during a Tahoe Basin Ski League giant slalom at Mammoth Mountain.
Hillman, a sophomore, clocked a time of 1 minute, 16.06 seconds to post the day’s highest finish for the Tigers.
Douglas finished fifth in the combined team standings with 298 points during the season-opening race.
Hillman accounted for 52 points to help the Douglas take third-place in the boys team standings with 176 points.
Also for the Tigers, freshman Sean Dunkelman placed 11th in 1:19.02, Bryan Harris 18th in 1:26.50, Wesley Alexander 22nd in 1:30.61, Zach Ingrey 24th in 1:31.39, Logan Lalonde 30th in 1:39.50, Jon Pelcher 31st in 1:40.58 and Filippo Calandri 36th in 1:47.38.
Incline freshman Winston Pretti clocked a time of 1:11.48 to win the boys race by nearly two seconds ahead of Whittell’s Payton Norton.
Tara Cottrill led the Douglas girls, as the junior crossed the finish with an 18th-place time of 1:28.76 and Kate Hill finished 27th in 1:39.16. Mary Weyland also placed 30th, Peri Buck 31st, Katya Koepsel 32nd, Sydney Ence 33rd and Madison Elder 36th.
Incline’s Laurel Taylor won the race in 1:16.15, less than four-tenths of a second ahead of Whittell’s Madison Idso in 1:16.52.
South Tahoe edged North Tahoe 376-360 for first-place. Incline finished third with 355 points, followed by Truckee with 341 points, Douglas with 298 and Whittell with 281.
The Douglas girls finished sixth with 122 points.
Bradley Loshbough placed ninth for Douglas in the JV boys race with a tie of 1:30.25, while Kristian Metsamaki placed 11th in 1:31.57 and Andrew Voss 14th and Kaehler Angelo 19th. Jaden Peterson placed ninth in the JV girls race, while teammates Dominique Groffman finished 13th and Amanda Process 14th.
