Eleven different players contributed for the Douglas High girls tennis team in its season-opening 16-2 victory at home against Galena on Thursday afternoon.
Douglas swept all nine doubles matches and received wins from five singles players during a rematch between teams that met in the Northern Division I Region Tournament semifinals in 2014. Douglas won that match and went on to finish as the runner-up in both the region and state tournaments.
Thursday’s action was closer than the final score showed, according to Tigers coach Dan Hannah.
“There were several matches that went 6-4 and 7-5, so the final 16-2 tally did not truly indicate the differences between the teams,” noted Hannah, who also extended credit to assistant coaches Ginny Unger, JoJo Townsell, and Susan Cowan.
Madelyn Landerfelt, the two-time region tournament girls singles runner-up, won both of her sets without dropping a game. Maggie Rich was a 7-5 winner in her lone match while coming back from a tonsillectomy.
The doubles teams of Anne Pomroy-Kayleigh Carlson, Tara Cottrill-Kari Coziahr, and Terra Williams-Kylie Coziahr all went undefeated during the match.
Amanda Bak, a region tournament qualifier last year, accounted for both of Galena’s wins in singles action.
