Girls set for Sierra Winter Challenge

A busy schedule awaits the Douglas High girls basketball team this weekend at the High Sierra Winter Challenge.

Douglas is scheduled to play four games in three days Thursday through Saturday in a tournament co-hosted by Spanish Springs and Reno high schools. A field of 24 teams from Nevada and California has been assembled to play in the three-day round robin tournament.

The Tigers open on Thursday with a 6 p.m. contest against Spring Creek at Spanish Springs in Sparks, then come back to play Lassen (Susanville, Calif.) Friday at 6 p.m. at Reno High School. The Tigers conclude their tournament schedule Saturday at Reno High School, at noon against Lowry (Winnemucca) and 4:30 p.m. against South Tahoe.

Lowry is the defending Division I-A state champion, while Spring Creek finished as the Northern I-A region runner-up. Lassen went 12-15 and advanced to the CIF Northern Section Division IV playoff quarterfinals in 2013-14.

Douglas has seven returnees back from a team that went 19-9 overall and finished as the Sierra League runner-up in 2013-14. Senior forward Leonna Mortimer and junior point guard McKenna Kynett are both returning first-team all-league players.

The Tigers tipped off their season Tuesday night with a Northern Division I cross-over game at North Valleys.
