Galena powers past Douglas
Eric Anderson slammed two home runs Thursday afternoon to help power the Galena High baseball team to a 10-2 victory against Douglas in a clash of teams tied for second-place in the Northern Division I regular season race.
Anderson hit a solo home run and Galena (13-6 overall, 10-1 league) went on to score three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Grizzlies scored their last two runs with the aid of two throwing errors.
The Grizzles added two more runs in the third inning and Anderson hit a two-run homer in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1.
Douglas (15-5 overall, 9-2 league) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dalton Grisell doubled down the left field line and scored moments later when Dillon Lopez hit a double that one-hopped the fence in left field.
Anderson led off the top of the second inning and hit a towering drive that cleared the fence near the scoreboard in left-center field. Anderson’s second home run cleared the fence near the 370-foot sign in left-center.
Galena scored its final two runs in the seventh on Chaz Clark’s run-scoring double and Brock Raggio’s RBI single. The Tigers helped their own cause defensively when Dillon Lopez, Dusten Plante and Matt Santos combined to turn a 6-4-3 double play.
Raggio pitched seven-hit ball over six innings to earn credit for the win. Along the way, Raggio had a quick third inning when he retired three batters on the minimum three pitches.
Anderson came on to pitch the seventh in relief and allowed one unearned run to close out the game. Kyle Johnson reached base on an infield error to lead off the Douglas rally, Parker Dixon drew a walk and Cale Kynett singled up the middle to drive home pinch runner Andrew Bigam.
Cole Peck started on the mound and allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings.
