The Sierra Lutheran High School boys basketball team started fast on Saturday and never looked back on its way to a 61-47 Western Division IV victory at home against Coleville.

Sierra Lutheran led 19-5 after one quarter and 31-15 at halftime for a win that vaulted the Falcons into second-place in the West race. The Falcons took a 7-2 league record (13-6 overall) into their showdown for first-place Tuesday against Whittell in Zephyr Cove (the result was unavailable at press time).

“The season has been good — we’ve played well at times — but I’m not sure we’ve played a great game yet,” Sierra Lutheran coach Alan Reed said. “I’m hoping that happens. I’m sure they (players) want to get better and do more. But we’ve got a long way to go before we accomplish the things we want.”

The Falcons played well enough to pick up an important win against a talented Coleville (7-8 overall, 3-6 league) squad.

Jerod Hamilton scored 19 points and Michael Patrick 18 to lead Sierra Lutheran offensively. Patrick hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hamilton added one. Patrick also shot 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Evan Lewis also scored 10 points for the Falcons and Nick Walker added 5, including a 3-pointer.

Seth Huhta led Coleville with 17 points and Joel Gomez had 13.

“That’s a good team,” Reed said of the Wolves. “They have talent.”

Looking ahead on the schedule, Sierra Lutheran plays at Smith Valley on Friday. Coleville is at home next Tuesday against Excel Christian.
