Falcons knock off Smith Valley
The Sierra Lutheran High volleyball team weren’t phased in the least after dropping their first set on Friday night against two-time defending Western 1A league champion Smith Valley.
Instead, the Falcons pulled themselves back for a 3-1 victory and vaulted into sole possession of first-place in the league standings. Sierra Lutheran won 22-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-21 as Smith Valley (3-1, 9-4) absorbed its first league loss since an Oct. 22, 2013 match at Coleville.
Macey Creek had 10 aces and added 30 assists for Sierra Lutheran (4-0 league, 9-7 overall). Kimberly Eckert turned in a stellar defensive performance with 28 digs for the Falcons.
Abby Ferenz had 11 kills, Ciera Schinzing nine kills and Gabby Kale eight.
Sierra Lutheran came back on Saturday to sweep past Excel Christian in Sparks, 3-0. The Falcons won 25-17, 25-8, 25-6.
Briana Mofhitz-Faieta served up 19 points, including nine aces. Ferenz contributed 12 points, including six aces. Schinzing also put down five blocks.
The Falcons face another important test Tuesday at home against Virginia City (3-1) and play at home Saturday against Coleville.
