Falcons break into win column
Five different players combined to rush for eight touchdowns Saturday in Sierra Lutheran High’s 78-6 Western 1A 8-man football win against Pyramid Lake.
Cole Contreras joined sophomores Nathan Waite and Thomas Mellum to rush for two touchdowns each for Sierra Lutheran (1-2), which led 21-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime at Falcon Field.
Contreras rushed for 132 yards on six carries, while Mellum added 93 yards and touchdowns on his only two carries. Alex Westre rushed for 70 yards on six carries, Waite had 69 yards on three carries and freshman Hunter Lamprecht 30 yards on three carries.
Waite scored four touchdowns overall, including one on a pass reception and another on an interception return.
Kicking normally doesn’t figure prominently in 8-man football, however, freshman John Miles was 9-for-11 PAT opportunities and in the fourth quarter converted his only field goal attempt, a 40-yarder.
Quarterback Ryan Salerno completed two of his four passes, including a 25-yard touchdown hook-up with Austin Stone and 4-yard scoring pass to Waite.
Peyton Hedwall and Contreras led the defense with eight tackles each, while Alex Bernhard and Westre added seven each. Caleb Klubben also blocked a punt, while Zak Houghton, Rocky DiMartino, Bernhard and Contreras each recovered a fumble. Mellum had an interception.
The Falcons play away from home for the first time this Saturday when they visit Excel Christian in Sparks.
