Douglas volleyball loses to Manogue
Bishop Manogue swept past Douglas 3-0 Tuesday night in a Sierra League volleyball showdown in Reno that was closer than the final score would indicate.
So, what else is new?
This time, Manogue bested Douglas by set scores of 26-24, 25-17, 25-20 in a matchup between familiar rivals that have combined to win five region tournament championships since 2010.
Manogue is the defending region champion and has won three titles in the last four years. Douglas won the 2014 title and in 2010 captured region and state championships.
Manogue (7-0 league, 13-2 overall) retained its hold on first-place in the Sierra League coming into yet another critical match Thursday night at Carson.
Douglas (5-2, 15-3) fell two games off the league lead and into a second-place tie with Carson, however, the Tigers realize there is still plenty of time left in the season leading up to the Northern 4A Region Tournament Nov. 1-5 at Galena High School in Reno. Two teams will move on to represent the North at the NIAA 4A state tournament Nov. 11-12 in Reno.
Anna Bertolone led Douglas at the net with nine kills and also had a team-high eight digs. Talyn Jackson had 12 assists and five blocks.
A “team effort” boosted Douglas to its 2-1 win at Manogue. The Tigers won 25-20, 23-25, 15-12.
“This was a team effort,” noted coach Marie Humble. “I have never seen this group of girls push for a win this steady and this hard. They were an amazing machine that never quit, never relented.”
Caitlyn Costa and Jolee Godde contributed four kills each, while Scarlett Harmon and Lindsay Marangi added three each. Olivia Johnson contributed three aces.
