It was the start the Douglas High football team needed Friday night against five-time defending region champion Reed.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff and took more than six minutes off the clock with a 12-play drive that resulted in Josh Gurule’s 33-yard field goal.

That 3-0 lead was shortlived, however, because Reed only needed 18 offensive plays to score 35 first-half points en route to a 53-16 win against Douglas at Keith Roman Field.

Quarterback Cameron Emerson rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns plus he was 7-for-7 and 113 more yards through the air in the first half. Tre Bussey rushed for 99 yards and one touchdown as Reed (1-1) surged to a 35-9 lead.

Douglas (1-1) drove 62 yards before Gurule kicked his field goal. Will Williams ignited the drive with a 38-yard run and quarterback Hunter Hickey converted a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak from the 18 to keep the drive alive.

Overall, the Tigers had possession in Reed territory nine times and scored points on three of six drives into the red zone. Another opportunity was missed when Reagan Roberson’s 39-yard catch and run to the 1 was nullified by a block in the back penalty. Roberson went to the sideline with a shoulder injury shortly after that and never returned.

Hickey scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak in the second quarter and Ryland DeSomber scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

After falling behind 3-0, Reed answered when Emerson completed two passes and then ran 49 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

Bussey finished with 188 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 10 carries.

Robert Ferrel scored on a 5-yard run and 31-yard pass in the second quarter then returned the second half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.
