Teams competing in eight Douglas High School sports programs are set to start their fall season this week.

It all starts Thursday when the girls and boys tennis teams face McQueen. The defending region champion Douglas girls are at home while the boys travel to Reno in Northern 4A conference matches that start at 3 p.m.

The Tigers’ freshman and JV football teams also travel to McQueen on Thursday to play at 3:30 and 5:45 p.m. Douglas plays at McQueen in the varsity opener Friday at 7 p.m. (see related story).

Action continues on Friday when the Douglas girls and boys cross country teams host the annual Class Races at Lampe Park. Teams from around the North will run in four races — freshman, sophomore, junior and senior — that are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Douglas girls soccer team will travel to California Friday and Saturday to open its season as part of a four-team showcase. The Tigers take on Santa Rosa power Montgomery in a 6:30 p.m. contest at East Washington Sports Complex in Petaluma, then face Casa Grande (Petaluma) at noon at Montgomery High. South Tahoe is the fourth team participating. Montgomery is currently ranked No. 2 in the West by the website.

The girls were runner-up finishers at last year’s region tournament and have qualified for the state tournament the last two years under coach Werner Christen.

Douglas volleyball begins Saturday when the freshman travel to Sparks for a tournament hosted by the Northern Nevada Juniors Club. The Tigers’ varsity squad hosts Truckee on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Douglas boys soccer team will make its debut under head coach Chase Zumpft on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. match at McQueen.

The girls golf team opens its season on Sept. 1 with a 1 p.m. Sierra League match at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley.
