Douglas kicks off today at McQueen
With five returning players, including fourth-year varsity veterans Flavi Lopez and Luke Heinrichs, the Douglas High boys soccer team kicks off its season today against McQueen in Reno.
The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
This marks the debut for Chase Zumpft as the program’s head coach. Zumpft replaces Milko Vasquez, who announced his retirement at the end of the 2015 season after seven seasons as head coach (2006-10 and 2014-15).
The Tigers return to action Saturday for an 11 a.m. non-league contest at Incline, the 2015 NIAA 2A state champion.
Heinrichs has been a four-year starter at goalkeeper and Lopez a four-year starter at forward for the Tigers. Heinrichs was a second-team all-league goalkeeper during the 2015 season in which he registered seven shutouts last year. Lopez led the team in scoring last year with eight goals and earned honorable mention recognition.
Other returnees include senior midfielder Zach Kruse, senior midfielder Hira Balwinder and sophomore midfielder Brian Cervantes.
Douglas is scheduled to play its home opener next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. against North Valleys in a rematch of last year’s region tournament opening round. Douglas dropped a 1-0 decision to North Valleys in that game to finish its season with a 7-9-4 record.
