Douglas JV girls remain unbeaten
The Douglas Tigers girls JV futbol team won its rivalry game at Carson on Saturday, 6-1, to remain undefeated and untied for the season.
Douglas (11-0) took an early lead and never looked back.
In the third minute, outside midfielder Amelia Cochran received a pass in the right corner of the pitch from midfielder Caitlyn Camara, found a clear shot on goal and slotted the ball near post for a 1-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute, striker Devi Schwartz won a ball just outside Carson’s penalty box, turned her defender and placed a shot in the far corner of the net.
Carson took its first and only shot on goal and scored on a one-touch shot to the upper V from about 20 yards out.
Douglas opened the second half scoring with a nifty move in the box by striker Faye Fournier off of a pass from Schwartz. Then Schwartz scored on another shot from inside the box to the lower corner of the net.
The Tigers put the game away with nine minutes left when Callie Weston scored on a quick turn in the box after receiving a pass from striker Austin Zivkovic.
Weston scored on a through ball toward the net. She arrived just as the keeper placed her foot on the ball, took a strike to the chest, then followed the ball as it bounced toward the net and tapped it in for the goal.
Douglas saw the return of keeper Shelbi Beaty who started the game in the net, with Meleeah McKown handling the duties in the second half.
Coach Rick Smith said the Tigers backline was again strong with outstanding games from center backs Claire Ingrey and Colby Bera. They were supported by defenders Hailey Christensen, Tara Dragoo, Ari Bilderback, Sophia Bottino, and Savanna Harrington. Midfielders Dana Merriam, Tess Sando, Jessee Cabrera, Alejandra Ramos, Adriana Grant and Vaneza Diaz helped the Tigers control the middle of the pitch, the coach added.
All 22 Douglas players who traveled to the game saw meaningful playing time.
