Douglas girls rally past Galena
Defense was the difference Friday night when the Douglas High girls basketball team rallied for a 39-27 Sierra League victory at Galena.
Douglas (17-6 overall, 6-1 league) trailed 12-5 after one quarter, but only allowed 15 points the rest of the way.
The Tigers scored 14 unanswered points during a span bridging the third and fourth quarters to catch Galena and take control of the game. Leonna Mortimer’s basket and free throw gave the Tigers their first lead, 26-24 late in the third quarter. Kelly Sonnemann’s 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter extended their lead to 30-24.
Jessie Jim scored 10 points, 8 in the second half, to lead the offense.
Douglas visits McQueen on Tuesday then comes back on Friday to host Bishop Manogue in what shapes up to be a showdown for the league championship.
Douglas (11-8 overall, 7-5 league) was limited to 22 points through three quarters in a 59-46 loss against league-leading Galena. The Grizzlies (15-6, 10-2) led 43-22 at the end of three quarters.
James Herrick had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers (11-8 overall, 7-5 league), who remained tied for third-place in the league race. Pat Johnson and Michael Johnson knocked down 3-pointers during a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter.
