Douglas girls advance in region play

Staff Reports

All six of Douglas High’s entries had little difficulty winning their opening round matches during Northern Division I Region Tournament girls singles and doubles tennis action Tuesday in Reno.

Second-round and quarterfinal matches will be played today at Caughlin Athletic Club. The semifinals and finals are Saturday.

Every player in the Douglas lineup is seeded. Coach Dan Hannah noted that at this point, however, that the Tigers are simply taking it one match at a time.

“We’re just going out to play whoever is out there,” Hannah said.

The Tigers’ No. 1 seeded doubles team of Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomroy (33-0) advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Madison Cameron-Bailey Jensen of Damonte Ranch. No. 2 seeded Kaitlyn Smith and Terra Williams (29-3) defeated Nina Christiansen-Kimber Stamps of North Valleys by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Tara Cottrill and Kylie Coziahr (33-2), who are seeded No. 5, defeated Romo and Vidal of Spanish Springs 6-0, 6-1 (and could face Carlson-Pomroy in the semifinals).

Carlson and Pomroy were No. 9 seeds last year at this time. Now, they’re shooting for a spot in the finals on Saturday.

“Their transformation has been phenomenal,” Hannah said of the two seniors. “Last year, they were just happy to be out there. They’ve put in a lot of work with (coach) Ginny Unger and if you watch them on the court, they execute what she tells them perfectly. Now, they’re really starting to believe, and that’s what is so much fun.”

In singles, No. 2 seeded Madelyn Landerfelt (28-2) defeated McQueen senior Lisa De Rafols 6-0, 6-0; No. 6 seeded Maggie Rich (26-8) defeated Lexi Rund of Hug 6-0, 6-0; and No. 16 seeded Kari Coziahr (23-17) defeated Wooster’s Angeline Mallari 6-1, 6-0. Coziahr will play her first match today against top-seeded and defending region tournament singles champion McKenna LeVitt of Reno.

The top three finishers in each bracket advance to the State Championships next week at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.

Douglas had two players advance in opening round boys singles play on Wednesday: Dylan Barke (17-2), seeded No. 10, defeated Adam Deming of Bishop Manogue 6-0, 6-1, and Josh Brown (14-5), seeded No. 13, defeated Daniel D’Olimpio of Wooster 6-1, 6-1. Barke faces No. 7 William Boyden of Reno while Brown plays No. 4 Chase Gonfiantini in the second round this morning.

In doubles, Range Chapman and Jake Rouse lost to Thomas Ault and Stephen Patton of Reno 6-1, 6-0. Sam Nanse and Landon Whitely also lost their opener to third-seeded Benjamin Vincze and Cameron Young of Reno 6-1, 6-1.
