Douglas, Galena boys hoops square off tonight
Douglas High School hosts Galena tonight in a meeting between Sierra League rivals and two of the North’s most successful boys basketball programs over the past decade.
No doubt, Douglas (2-2 overall, 1-1 league) and Galena (3-2) will come prepared to play in a game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The two teams split two meetings last season, with Galena winning the December game at home 68-56, while Douglas won the rematch in Minden 70-62 en route to clinching the league championship. Douglas finished its 2012-13 season 19-7 overall (15-1 league), while Galena went 24-6 (13-3 league) and advanced to the region tournament semifinals before losing to Hug.
While Galena has won seven region championships and one state title since 1997, this is a new season under the Grizzlies’ second-year head coach, Brian Voyles, who has four sophomores and one freshman on the roster.
On the other hand, the Tigers are led by 6-foot-5 senior Austin Evans and 6-10 senior James Herrick, who are averaging 13.3 and 12.0 points per game. Herrick is also averaging 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots per game.
The Grizzlies feature good size with 6-4 junior guard Josiah Wood, 6-6 junior Zack Lessinger, 6-5 sophomore Zachary Williams and 6-4 freshman Dillon Voyles. Wood scored a game-high 27 points Saturday for the Grizzlies in their 56-45 victory against Reed at the Rail City Classic.
Looking ahead, the Tigers will take nearly a week off for Christmas before returning to action on Dec. 26-30 at the Las Vegas Prep Championship.
