Coleville girls top Whittell
The Coleville High girls basketball team pitched a first-quarter shutout Saturday on its way to a 26-19 Western Division IV win against Whittell in Zephyr Cove.
Coleville (9-5 overall, 4-3 league) led 12-0 after one quarter and 16-3 at halftime.
Stephanie Sandoval, Miranda Sturdivant and Aide Merato scored 6 points each to lead the Wolves offensively. Shaylor McCann had 8 rebounds while Nicole Smith and Sandoval picked off 6 steals each.
The Wolves were coming off a 41-31 loss at home on Friday against league-leading Pyramid Lake. Smith turned in a strong all-around performance with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 steals. McCann also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Pyramid Lake led 22-16 at halftime then extended its lead with a 15-1 run through the third quarter.
The Wolves dropped a 60-32 decision at Pyramid Lake on Dec. 21.
In the boys game, sophomore Palmer Chaplin scored 26 points and freshman Cole Snyder 16 for Whittell in a 68-45 win against Coleville (7-6. 4-3).
The Warriors (12-3, 6-1) jumped out to a 24-10 first-quarter lead and 45-19 at halftime.
