Carson Valley cowgirl Cassidy Champlin got off to a fast start Sunday during the first performance at the 67th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Champlin, a recent Douglas High School graduate and Nevada state champion barrel racer, rode Casadys Cash n Fame to a 17.574 clocking, the second fastest for Sunday’s first performance at the Sweetwater Events Complex. She finished just off the time of 17.243 posted by Ali Armstrong of Lexington, Okla.

Champlin’s time still stood as the fourth fastest as of Tuesday afternoon.

The national event continues through Saturday.
