Boys soccer team clinches playoff spot
For the first time since 2009, the Douglas High boys soccer team is playoff-bound.
Pedro Vega scored two goals and added an assist in the first half Wednesday afternoon to help put Douglas (5-6-3 league, 9-6-4 overall) out front on its way to a 4-2 Sierra League victory at home against Bishop Manogue.
The win, coupled with Wooster’s 3-0 win over Damonte Ranch on Wednesday, enabled Douglas to clinch no worse than fourth-place in the league and a berth in the Northern Division I Region Tournament. The Tigers now hold a seven-point lead over Damonte Ranch (3-9-2) in the league standings with two games left to play.
Vega scored on a direct kick in the fourth minute to put Douglas on the scoreboard. Next, Koby Hinnant scored after taking a long diagonal ball from Chris McKimmey in the seventh minute.
Douglas scored its next goal off a corner kick from Javier Vega. Pedro Vega flicked the ball backward to Chris Gold, who blasted his shot to the far post.
Pedro Vega scored again when he blasted home a long ball to the far post to extend the Douglas lead to 4-0 before halftime.
Outside midfielders Alex Sanz and Micah Miller helped the Tigers control the tempo during the contest, coach Milko Vasquez noted.
Douglas plays Monday night at 7 p.m. against Damonte Ranch in Reno and then concludes its regular season Wednesday at home against Carson.
