Alta Alpina starting mountain bike team

Staff Reports

A local interscholastic mountain bike team sponsored by the Alta Alpina Cycling club is now organizing to compete in the inaugural Nevada Interscholastic Cycling Association season this fall.

High school and middle school students (grades 6-12) are eligible to race in a season that begins at the end of August and culminates with the association championships in mid-October. The league is not affiliated with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association or California Interscholastic Federation high school programs.

Alta Alpina will field a composite team comprising girls and boys of all ability levels and from “any school in our area,” according to Mel Maalouf, who is organizing the Alta Alpina team along with Carlo Luri.

Students who live in the Carson Valley, Alpine County, South Lake Tahoe and other local areas may join, Maalouf added.

Four races are listed on the schedule for the league season: Aug. 28, the North Tahoe Challenge at North Tahoe High School in Tahoe City; Sept. 10, the Ironhorse Roundup at Hidden Valley Regional Park in Sparks; Sept. 25, the High Sierra Showdown at Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, Calif.; and Oct. 16, the Sierra Nevada Championships at Tahoe Donner Nordic Center in Truckee.
