The Douglas Pop Warner Tigers represented their community and Sagebrush Pop Warner last weekend in two Pacific Northwest Regional semifinal games.
Six championship games were played at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, where the Douglas Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee teams represented the community with Tiger Pride. The Douglas Pop Warner Mitey Mites played at Douglas High School in the Joe Tobia Classic games held at various locations in Northern Nevada.
The Pee Wee Tigers played for a regional title against a South Valley team (Bay Area) that won 28-0. Coach Darren Daniels said: “The Tigers played with pride and heart. Being my first season as a head coach I am extremely pleased with our outcome. These boys have been a joy to coach, their heart, determination, and commitment to one another and themselves are truly remarkable.”
The undefeated Douglas Junior Pee Wee Division II team played next against the East Bay Wolverines with a hard fought game that resulted in their first loss, by a final score of 25-7. After the game Coach Shane Thomas said: “We were simply outmatched by this Division I, two-time nationally recognized champion. The Wolverines played with a lot of class and the sportsmanship between the two teams exemplifies what Pop Warner stands for.” Coach Thomas explained his pride on how the Tiger team never gave up and is looking forward to improving his coaching techniques for future meetings against teams like this.
The Mitey Mites started the day at Douglas High School with an early morning game that had them playing against the Hollister Vikings from the Bay Area. The game was hard fought and ended with a 33-13 victory for Hollister. After the game Coach Allen Peake said: “Proud of the display of team work and sportsmanship displayed.”
